I purchased my first Boardy in 2018 and have since then been riding it joyfully for a few thousand kilometers. I never had a problem with it, not even a flat tire. And I have put it to the test, riding on many rough roads. I did, however, change the tires a few times and the brake once. It still works fine even though it naturally looks a bit worn out.
When I saw that Boardy was back in business, I was eager to obtain the upgraded version of the flawless predecessor. I am happy to notice that not much has changed, even though everything has changed. What I mean is that the basic design remains unchanged while all parts and details have been somewhat modified and improved upon. These upgrades give it a more attractive look and increase its robustness and comfort without significantly compromising the weight.
The board
When I saw that the new board was a bit thicker and wider than the older model, I was slightly concerned that it wouldn’t be as flexible. That wasn’t the case. It is equally flexible and low. A low deck means less strain on legs and joints, which is essential to me as I often ride long distances carrying a backpack. (Max ride in one day is 115 kilometers.) The adjustment of making the board slightly wider made an important difference. It is considerably easier to switch legs, which makes the ride more relaxing and smoother.
Wheels
On my first ride, I had the feeling it was rolling faster and with less effort and thought it was possibly only my imagination. But after closer inspection, I read that the Boardy 2.0 has been upgraded with industrial bearings with a “longer service life and lower rolling resistance.” This is much appreciated.
Floor stand
In my package, I also received a floor stand which will become very useful at home. It is quite heavy and robust, and Boardy stays firm on the stand instead of always leaning against a wall or something. A few times my older Boardy has fallen, and the handlebar has taken the impact. Most likely that could cause handlebar damage, which is obviously something I would like to avoid.

The new handlebar is slightly wider. Besides giving it a more aesthetic look, it noticeably adds to the general comfort.
Mudguard
I am pleased to see that the mudguard has been upgraded with a small metal frame added to it. The older version could be a bit unstable and occasionally made some noise.

Boardy “THE BOARDSCOOTER” is a Hungarian invention, it is manufactured in Budapest, Hungary, with the majority of materials and components sourced from reputable European suppliers. The self-supporting flexible wooden frame, which extends throughout its entire length, was conceived in 2015 by one of our founders, Balazs, who possesses a degree in physics. After a decade of utilizing traditional kickscooters, he became frustrated with their limitations on various surfaces, such as cobblestone areas within parks. His criteria were explicitly defined:
The scooter should feel comfy on all types of roads.
The scooter needs a wide board and a high handlebar to ensure it’s comfortable for adults.
An efficient handbrake is a must, one that works well even in wet conditions.
Several folded scooters should fit in the trunk of an average car.
The scooter shouldn’t weigh more than a standard scooter with 200 mm solid wheels
The very first Boardy prototype was completed in September 2015. We crafted the innovative flexible board using a special press tool, and we borrowed the wheels from a kids’ bike, the additional frame components were fabricated in a little workshop.

The first prototype was functional right away, but just a few small tweaks were still needed.
During the first test ride it was already apparent that the novel frame structure provided an impressive riding experience. Boardy delivered top-notch comfort on any terrain and was capable of high speed thanks to its 12″ wheels. Over the next few months, we made some enhancements to both the board and the folding mechanism, and by Christmas 2015, we had three finished Boardys ready as family gifts!
From that Christmas onward, those three Boardys joined us on every family adventure. On our first trip to France, they stole the show at the beach — everyone wanted to take them for a spin, and quite a few wanted to place their orders right away, even though we hadn’t planned for mass production just yet.
After returning home from France, Balázs teamed up with his lawyer buddy Andras to found the company. Soon a small batch of Boardys was ready, which sold out in just a few days!
Boardys made quite the splash in South France in the summer of 2016.

We developed new metal press tools for bending the boards.
We shipped the first Boardy to US in September 2016, and to RSA (South Africa) in October. Clearly, there was growing interest in Boardys all around the globe.
In 2018, an investor came on board, which opened up exciting opportunities for further development. We moved into a larger workshop and introduced some new products: the mudguard, XL model, Lite model, and kids’ model.
In 2018, we transitioned to a bigger and better-equipped workshop.

The Boardy XXL was designed for weights up to 330 lbs (150 kg), but once we crafted a custom version that could hold up to 370 lbs (165 kg)!
The Boardy Lite had a simpler design without foldability and came at a lower price point; however, most folks still favored our more fully equipped models.
The Boardy Kid was built for weights up to 110 lbs (50 kg), but we decided to stop production on this one back in 2021.
Our sales have been on a steady rise, and we’ve got happy customers from over 30 countries.
However, we faced some tough times due to COVID-19. The bicycle industry took a hit, and we experienced shortages of essential parts and materials. For instance, tires had a waiting list of two years, along with spokes and bearings. This situation made it impossible for us to keep production going. Yet, through all the challenges, our belief in our brand never wavered.
Introducing the new Boardy!
We managed to restart the company in 2023 with a new team member, a friend of us, the computer scientist Zoltan. We dedicated an entire year to completely redesigning Boardy — every single part has been improved! The new Boardy is stronger, wider, taller, and features a clearer design. Each component has been enhanced just a little bit more. Our new board is crafted using a 60-ton press tool, and the frame parts are CNC machined from one solid piece of material to reduce welds.

The first New Boardys were delivered in the summer of 2024. Since then, we’ve been steadily ramping up our production, and by 2025, we’re excited to roll out even more. Boardy’s frame is flexible along its entire length, so there is no need for complicated wheel suspensions, and springs, and thanks to the wooden structure, the frame perfectly absorbs the vibrations caused by the road. The wooden frame performs the function of both springs and shock absorbers at the same time. This type of design offers a higher comfort experience than any other wheel suspension, and the silent, smooth glide is unmatched by any other kick scooter.
Most compact scooters are usually equipped with solid polyurethane wheels. The polyurethane almost completely loses its grip on wet surfaces, and the solid wheel does not provide any vibration absorption. Boardy is equipped with air-inflatable Continental tires, which have very good grip even on wet roads, and they absorb vibrations very well due to their balloon design. The specialty of these Continental tires, that they can be inflated up to 58 Psi (4 bar). We recommend riders to always use the maximum pressure for the best rolling properties. With this maximum pressure Boardy rolls better than bigger wheeled bikes! When we tested the new Boardy on a flat road, we could reach 21 mph (34 km/h).
From 2024, Boardy is only mounted with the more expensive industrial bearings wheels. The sealed industrial bearings are maintenance-free, they do not need to be set, and their sealed cover keeps water and dust away from the bearing balls. Sealed industrial bearings have much longer service life and lower rolling resistance than conventional bicycle wheel bearings
The handbrake is always at hand. When you have to brake suddenly, the handbrake can be activated in less than a fraction of a second, earlier than the traditional foot-operated friction brake, so handbrake can shorten the braking distance by up to 4-5 meters. The handbrake lever operates a special BMX bike U-Brake, which is equipped with silicone BMX brake pads for greater performance. The brake is also equipped with a brake booster, which is similar to what is used on Mountain bikes. The brake booster increases the braking power, and it also strengthen the front fork. The special handbrake lever is equipped with a locking function: the fixed brake lever keeps the brake engaged, similar to the handbrake of cars, so the propped up Boardy doesn’t roll away even on sloping terrain.
The steering column of the Boardy can be folded down in a few seconds, so you can easily put even 4 Boardys into the trunk of an average car. When the steering column is folded, the Boardy is considered a folded scooter, which can be taken on public transport and taken into the stores. If you want to fold the Boardy even smaller, remove the quick-release rear wheel with one movement. Fender can also be removed with a few movements.
The Mudguard on Boardy is fixed by hand nuts, so it could be removed and installed in a matter of seconds. Many people only put it on in the rain, many people take it off when packing the scooter without the rear wheel. And there are some people who use Boardy sometimes with mudguard and sometimes without mudguard, because they can’t decide which one looks better.
We tried to “carve” the Boardy parts from one piece of high-strength, and stainless material, which are primarily aluminum and stainless steel. The board is also made with CNC technology from laminated woody. Thanks to CNC technology, parts and joints are extremely precise, and the number of weldings is minimal. The appearance of the “CNC carved” parts are eye-catching, each of them could be perceived as a unique work of industrial art.
Each Boardy has a plate with a unique serial number. This plate certifies the authenticity of the Boardy and helps to identify exactly when and with what equipped it was made. The unique serial number is also important when you register the Boardy with insurance companies, and when report it to the police in case of theft.
Whether in the suburbs, in nature, downtown, or on the road, a Boardy has been my true companion for the last two years. In the past two weeks, I’ve had an opportunity to ride the new model, so I can share my experience with you.
Conclusion: I’m (still) feeling it’s a must-have in life.
Experiencing freedom
When first trying a Boardy, the first and biggest wow moment comes right after the initial kick. There’s no sense of friction, no slowing down, nothing – you just whoosh down the street with surprising speed but in absolute silence from corner to corner in a single kick. The inflated tyres and the flexible wooden board greatly add to the sensory experience, creating a feeling of dynamic movement and toning down the impact from any bump you hit into a kind of undulation. With a pair of regular 12” wheels, you don’t have to watch out for cracks and small gaps in the pavement or changes in the terrain, as even running on rough stone paving or dirt roads does not cause any discomfort. The foam handle is soft to the touch but provides a firm grip even in the heat, and the Shimano handbrake and the pretty expensive hubs deliver perfectly what is expected of them. The whole structure feels firm and solid but light, giving a feeling of control and security. The board is made of a material consisting of specially processed wood layers, providing the rider with a dynamic experience of the terrain that is unmatched by other scooters with their rigid boards. You can feel and react to everything under your wheels but in easy mode, without any discomfort or a fear of being stopped abruptly.
A showstopper
The whole scooter simply emanates quality, and it gets noticed. Even our two ‘old’ Boardys get regular compliments (often accompanied by a request for a test round), and I have to admit that the new model looks even smarter. The matte graphite-black parts contrast nicely with the natural, light wooden surface of the board, and the clean and timeless functional design, devoid of any excess, greatly enhances the effect. And it feels quality, too – the touch of the surfaces, the quality of workmanship and the details, the sturdiness, the dynamic response you got from the structure at speed and impact, and the very natural feeling of riding it all add to that. It’s the Harley of scooters.
No terrain to shy off from
The best feat is that you can go everywhere riding it. I regularly use it on cracked concrete pavement, old asphalt roads, dirt roads and tracks in the nearby forest or around the lake, a bicycle road, and cobblestone pavement, without even really noticing the changes in the terrain, hopping on and off kerbs. It works great on wet surfaces and in light snow, too – even whooshing through shallow puddles is okay (and a must-do). On flat and relatively dry terrain, you can easily do 20–25 km/h (that’s not a problem even for my 9-year-old), which makes it an effective means of transportation and a great eco-conscious choice for urban warriors: a backpack and a Boardy make carrying home all that stuff from the market or the grocery store so much faster and easier (and shopping rounds are so much more fun).

Travel companion
With a weight of about six kilos, lifting and carrying a Boardy is a simple task (my son has been proudly bringing his own scooter up the ten stairs on our way home since he was eight). Also, the steering column can be folded back to the board, making the scooter easy to transport on trains (as hand luggage) or fit into the boot of an average car (and it does not need much place). On such occasions, I used to fasten the folded steering column to the board with a luggage strap but as far as I know, Boardy’s own solution is on the way.
Surprisingly light
The mule
Despite its slender look, the Boardy is surprisingly sturdy: the guys who make them tested it (check Boardy’s FB page), and it did not break (or suffer any damage) even under 450 kgs of weight. It’s unlikely I’ll ever confirm that, but it surely works well (and is still easy to propel, even up a slight slope) with about 100–110 kgs. Before I managed to get my hands on a second Boardy, the two of us (with a then-seven-year-old) used to go to school on mine, him standing in front of the board with his elbows on the inner end of the grip (and usually nibbling on something or chatting incessantly) and me in the back, kicking the ground. It worked very well for us in the first two years of school on a daily basis: there was enough space on the board (not anymore), the steering column did not wiggle, neither did other parts of the structure, and the brakes were effective enough to safely stop this weight in time even at a considerable speed, even when the terrain was wet.
An e-bike does not help you stay fit
I am often asked, “Why didn’t you buy an e-scooter for that money?” Actually, the answer is very simple but has multiple facets: Because I sit with my laptop at least six hours a day (often much more) but want to stay fit and, therefore, use every opportunity to exercise. Because I’ve been constantly under time pressure over the past two decades and multitasking has become my second nature, so clearing my head while doing some cardio while going shopping or anywhere I have to seems an ideal way of dealing with daily tasks. Because I don’t want things around me that require too much attention, and a Boardy is practically no-maintenance (save for a tyre check every other week) and indestructible. Because I believe in clever design and simple solutions, and don’t feel needing something with a battery that needs to be charged regularly for something I can easily do without. It’s a life choice, basically.
A good kick scooter tones and shapes your whole body, as the right move is similar to speed skating. With a Boardy, it’s easy to go for speed (because you don’t have to watch the terrain) and give your all, which is great cardio. If you go for distance in the first place, you can plan covering about 50–60 km a day on average built roads. Either way, it’s hard to get bored with the feeling of gliding through the world so freely.

My first scooter was a fairly good Swiss piece with 20-cm cast plastic wheels. After switching to a Boardy, I can’t really imagine switching back again, but it’s no surprise as Boardy’s design is a conscious response to all demands in an urban environment that regular scooters fail to meet – negotiating diverse and difficult terrains perfectly while giving the best possible riding experience. Accordingly, there’s not much difference between the old and the new models: the new one simply looks better and feels even safer and sturdier. The old model has become iconic in my country, and the new one seems to follow the line.
Overall

It’s not simply better than any other non-electric scooters on the market but a game-changer in its category. The new Boardy is much more durable and resistant to weather and physical stress. One of the main developments in the new Boardy is that the head tube is designed so that the steering column can be replaced from the board in a few minutes without disassembly. The wheels are secured with a quick lock, and tire removal only takes a few seconds. Adjusting the brake also takes only a few minutes with the help of the video below.
Wheels and brakes are bicycle parts
The wear-and-tear wheel and brake components are standard bicycle parts, so they can be purchased at almost any bicycle workshop. The other parts are available at Boardy.
Boardy is not electric because a sailboat is not propelled by motor, and a runner does not travel the distance by bus. Boardy is not electric because the less we depend on gadgets and the more we can achieve our goals on our own, the freer we are.

The same can be said about the new Boardy. It is light and compact like a small wheeled scooter, but comfortable even for a person weighing 150 kg (330 lbs) and 2 meters (6′ 7″) tall.

Most compact kick scooters are equipped with plastic wheels, and they are maximum 8″ (20 cm) diameter. These small wheels get stuck on even the smallest bumps in the road, and the bearings in the plastic construction loosen quickly even under low loads. In contrast, the Boardy’s 12″ (32 cm) wheel size was chosen to provide safety on almost any uneven road surface and road defects, but they are still maintaining the scooter compact size. Boardy’s spoke designed wheels are made of metal and equipped with sealed industrial bearings, which ensure high load capacity and longevity.
Handlebar height: 108 cm (43″) / Handlebar width: 45 cm (18″)
Boardy probably has the highest handlebar height among the compact kick scooters. Its handlebar is adjustable up to 108 cm (43″) height. (Of course it can also be adjusted to a much lower position.) The high handlebar allows the rider to have a straight back body position, so the riding does not put a strain on the waist. If the rider is standing upright, he can look around, rather than who riding with his head down on a low handlebar scooter. – This is why the Boardy is called experience scooter.
Most kick scooters use a very narrow board, on which a single foot can hardly fit. This design originates from race scooters (kick-bikes), on which the usual riding (and switching legs) technique is that the person continuously jumps from one foot to the other during riding, and the stability is given by the speed, and the rider position, who constantly leans forward and puts most of his body weight on the handlebars. This riding technique is difficult to master,and it is not very comfortable during normal urban scootering. We designed the Boardy’s board to be double wide (170mm / 6.7″), so it is enough wide enough even for two size US12 sports shoes side by side. So even a beginner rider will have no problem switching legs, which makes riding for longer distances not tiring. Ride your scooter with both legs! Thanks to the parallel feet, riding on Boardy doesn’t put a strain on the waist, so its riding is completely different from the riding on narrow kick scooters. In spite of the different riding position the maximum available speed on Boardy is not much less than on kick-bikes. When we tested the new Boardy on a flat road, we could reach 21 mph (34 km/h), which speed is considered good even for a bicycle.
Deck height: 7 cm (2.7″) / Ground clearance (loaded): 5 cm (2″)
The low board height basically determines the experience of riding. Boardy has one of the lowest board heights, while its ground clearance (the space under the board) is no less than most scooters have. This low deck height also thanks to the self-supporting flexible wooden frame structure. The frame of the Boardy does not consist of a metal frame and a board on it, so the thickness of the frame is only 19 mm(!) under our feet. It ensures a lower board height and bigger ground clearance. Besides this, the frame of the Boardy is flexible. When you are riding, the board height is approx. 2 cm lower, but when you have to cross an obstacle or lift it over a curb without load, the ground clearance is again 2 cm higher.
We paid special attention to keep Boardy’s weight low, because for a lightweight vehicle even 2-pound extra weight is very noticeable when you have to hold it in your hand, or when you are going uphill. Despite the 12″ wheels, and the load capacity up to 150 kg (330 lbs), Boardy has a surprisingly low weight. Boardy’s weight is approximately the same as the weight of a traditional 8″ wheeled and 100 kg loadable kick scooter. This low weight primarily thanks to the self-supporting wooden frame structure. This frame design does not require a separate metal frame and a separate board, because the self-supporting wooden structure is a frame, a board, and a flexible suspension at the same time. For the lower weight, we also designed the other frame parts as light as possible and produced them with CNC technology.
Boardy’s load capacity is also unique among kick scooters. The frame is tested with a static load of 450 kg. As intended, even a 150 kg person can ride it, and even “bumps” on smaller curbs will not harm it. However, Boardy is definitely not designed for extreme/freestyle/dirt/downhill use, so tricks, teasing and downhill riding are not included in the intended use of Boardy in the least!

Next level riding performance
Easier, faster, further away!
The performance of the kick scooter is basically determined by the height of the board, the quality of the wheels and the weight of the scooter.
The board of the Boardy is much lower than most scooters have, so when riding on the Boardy you hardly need to bend your knees, which makes riding much less tiring than on most kick scooters.
Boardy has the same low rolling resistance as big-wheel bikes have, and the achievable relatively high speed thanks to the Continental tires (that can be inflated to 4 bar/58 Psi) and the wheel hubs equipped sealed industrial bearings. The front BMX bike brake and the special silicone brake pads ensure the safe stop. Boardy is recommended for distances of up to a few tens of kilometers with a speed of 10-15 km/h, and with good training, distances of up to 50-60 km can be covered, or you can reach an average speed of over 20 km/h.
The Boardy’s surprisingly low weight (which is about the same weight as a traditional 20 cm solid-wheel kick scooter has) also contributes to the experience of “light scootering”.

Boardy’s load capacity is unique among scooters. The frame is tested with a static load of 450 kg. As intended, even a 150 kg person can ride it, and even “bumps” on smaller curbs will not harm it. However, Boardy is definitely not designed for extreme/freestyle/dirt/downhill use, so tricks, teasing and downhill riding are not included in the intended use of Boardy in the least!
The Boardy solves many problems that other scooters have – its light weight makes uphill riding possible and uphill pushing effortless, and the flexibility of its board is like having suspension. What a great ride!
